We arrived to Reykjavik on Tuesday, and I continued my way forward (or upwards I guess) to Ísafjördur (to any Icelandic people reading this, I am sorry! I have no idea how to do the letter ð without copypasting, so I'm just violating the name of your lovely town constantly throughout this blog. And that goes for anything in Icelandic with special characters. You have been warned.) later the same day.
The view arriving via plane was pretty breath-taking with two huge mountains on either side of the fjord, the town itself on a peninsula within the fjord. The smudgy mobile phone picture definitely doesn't do it justice, but here you go anyway:
And I think this is the textbook definition of "A room with a view"
The first couple of days went by while learning basics about the school, and Fab Lab Ísafjördur, and Fab Lab as the larger organisation. Fab Lab is very much about community, integration and sharing ideas, And I have already seen this in action during the week with local teachers, students and other community members visiting the Lab.
Just as one example, on my first proper day at the lab, a person from http://snowsense.is came to engrave circuit boards they use in sensors that help predict potential avalanches in the regions. In Fab Lab they are also able to manufacture other parts for their sensors as needed. Which is pretty damn amazing/impressive/important! Below an image of the engraving process.
On my behalf, I have started to learn the basics of the Inkscape and laser cutting. I first started with cardboard tests, making and cutting out the logo of my web page ( www.toispualdesign.com ! ) , then a more complex shape, and finally today I used a design for an older pendant I had made, and cut that out of plexiglass.
The plexiglass is rather fragile for this small (about 6 x 5 cm) item with lots of thin appendixes, but I still feel I made decent enough progress within a few days.
In addition I did a stroll around downtown. Have a few pictures!

Elikkäs! Olen yksi kolmesta tähän blogiin kirjoittavasta tahosta, Antti. Heips!
Kuvia en postaille uusiksi enää tähän, mutta ajattelin että on kiva myös suomeksi jotain tekstiä heittää tänne aina postausten yhteydessä, ettei jää pelkkään englantiin nämä mun jutut :)
Saavuimme siis Reykjavikiin tiistaina aamulla, josta jatkoin itsekseni matkaa kohti pohjoista Ísafjördurin kaupunkia. Ísafjördur sijaitsee Westfjordsin alueella, keskellä vuonoja ja on alueen "pääkaupunki." Asukkaita on alle 3000, mutta silti keskuksena tämä on alueen runsaiten asutuin.
Kaupunki on venähtänyt osittain pisin rantaa, osittain vuonon keskelle ulottuvalle niemen kärjelle. Kummallakin puolella vuonoa noin 700 metriä korkeat vuoret. Pieni ja todella kaunis kaupunki! Odotan mielenkiinnolla, kun talvi alkaa tosissaan.
Ensimmäiset päivät menivät aika nopeasti opetellessa perusasioita niin koulusta, kuin Fab Labista organisaationa. Vierailijoita kävi jo parin päivän aikana muutamasta eri-ikäisestä koululaisryhmästä yhteisön jäseniin. Eräs kävijöistä oli http://snowsense.is -systeemin kehittäjän veli, joka kävi kaivertamassa laitteistolle lisää virtapiirejä. Tuo Snowsense siis on anturi, joka tarkkailee vuoristoalueilla lumen tilaa ja lähettää mobiilidatana tietoja siitä jatkuvasti, jolloin mahdolliset tulevat lumivyöryt voidaan ennakoida ja niihin pystytään varautumaan. Ihan hiton siistiä ja tärkeää! Laitteistoon voidaan siis Fab Labissa tulostaa ja kaivertaa käytettäviä osia sitä mukaa, kun tarvetta tulee.
Itse opettelin tällä viikolla käyttämään Inkscape-ohjelmaa, sekä laserleikkuria. Alkuun tuli tehtyä testejä pahvilla ja tänään vielä viime töikseni tein pleksistä leikatun version eräästä vanhasta riipuksestani ( www.toispualdesign.com ). Pleksi on vähän liian kovaa/haurasta noin pieneen esineeseen (ylempää siis se punainen peurankallo), mutta olin silti innoissani, kun onnistui tuottaa haluamani esine. Tästä on hyvä jatkaa ensi viikkoon!
